The Youth ChalleNGe Program
Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy - New London is a quasi-military program offering at-risk teens an opportunity to change their future and succeed outside of a traditional school setting by learning self discipline, leadership, and responsibility while working to obtain a high school equivalency diploma.

The program lasts 17 months and consists of two phases; phase one is the residential phase where students live on site for 22 weeks and attend educational and life skills classes while gaining self-confidence, self-esteem, leadership and teamwork skills.  After graduation, students return home and enter the 12 month post-residential phase.  During this period, TCA-New London case managers and trained mentors help graduates stay on a positive track by guiding them to enroll in higher education or vocational training, finding employment, or by enlisting in the military.

TCA - New London is monitored and overseen by the National Guard Bureau and encourages teamwork, personal growth, and development through eight core components as set forth by the NGB.  The eight core components are:

  • Academic excellence
  • Life-coping skills
  • Job skills
  • Health and hygiene
  • Responsible citizenship
  • Service to community
  • Leadership/followership
  • Physical fitness
