You and your child have made the decision to have him or her attend the youth challenge program in New London​​ and you have lots of questions.  The staff at TCA-New London are dedicated to helping your child successfully complete the program but your help and support can help them achieve their goals of taking the right path into adulthood.  

Adjusting to life at Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy can be challenging at first, but being prepared helps.  Below are some frequently asked questions you may have about the ChalleNGe program.  Hover over the question to read our suggestion on how to handle issues that may arise with your child.

  1. What do I do when my child is homesick and wants to come home?
    What do I do when my child is homesick and wants to come home?
    Please write letters of encouragement as often as possible; staff distributes mail on a daily basis and words from home can greatly affect your child's ability to finish the program.
  2. Will my child be able to keep their cell phone?
    Will my child be able to keep their cell phone?
    There will be no cell phones, video games or computers for social networking. We suggest you experiment going a day or two without these items to help them acclimate.
  3. Will my child have to get up early?

    Cadets get up early every morning. Get yourself and your child up at 5:30AM 2-3 mornings each week for a couple of weeks prior to Intake Day to help adjust.

    Many children (especially teens) live a life of inactivity. Prior to registration, motivate yourself and encourage your child to begin getting into condition by running and doing push-ups daily.

    Convenience food is not offered at TCA. Start offering home cooked meals, sitting down together for meals, and discouraging eating out at fast-food restaurants.

    The first few weeks can be very difficult for candidates/cadets and they find excuses to quit. It is important for you to stand firm and encourage your child to endure all of the changes.
Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy - New London is a great choice for most at-risk students. However, not everyone is suited for this very physically and mentally demanding program.
